Wall Sconces: Where to Use Them in Every Room

Glass wall sconce

Wall sconces are the quiet workhorses of a lighting plan. They add light at eye level, free up floor and table space, and bring a finished, architectural feel to a room. Here's where they earn their keep.

Flanking a Mirror or Vanity

A pair of sconces on either side of a bathroom or vanity mirror lights the face evenly and flatteringly — far better than a single overhead fixture, which casts shadows. Mount them around 60 to 66 inches from the floor, roughly at eye level.

Along a Hallway

In a long hallway, a series of evenly spaced sconces creates rhythm and guides you through the space. Space them about 8 to 10 feet apart, and keep the mounting height consistent for a clean look.

Beside the Bed

Wall-mounted sconces beside the bed replace table lamps, freeing the nightstand and keeping reading light right where you want it. Look for styles with an adjustable arm or a switch within easy reach.

Framing a Fireplace or Artwork

A symmetrical pair flanking a fireplace, headboard, or piece of art adds balance and a layer of warm accent light. This is where sconces do their most decorative work.

Mounting Height, in Short

  • General rooms: 60 to 72 inches from the floor.
  • Beside a mirror: around eye level, 60 to 66 inches.
  • Over a nightstand: a few inches above the mattress when seated up to read.
