Lighting Your Entryway and Foyer

Cascading staircase chandelier

The entry is the first impression of a home — and the right fixture sets the tone the moment someone walks in. Here's how to light it well, whatever the ceiling height.

Standard-Height Entries

In an entry with standard ceilings, a flush or semi-flush mount keeps the space open while providing even overhead light. If there's room to spare, a compact chandelier or pendant adds a welcoming focal point.

Two-Story Foyers

A double-height foyer is the place for a statement. A large or cascading chandelier fills the vertical volume and reads from both floors. Hang the bottom of the fixture above the second-floor sightline, and if there's a window above the door, center the fixture in it so it looks intentional from outside.

Don't Forget the Layers

Overhead light alone can feel flat. Add a console lamp or a pair of wall sconces to bring light to eye level, cast a warm glow, and make the entry feel finished.

Set the Right Tone

Warm bulbs and a dimmer let the entry shift from bright and practical during the day to soft and welcoming at night.
